Acquired Brain Injuries Unit To Close

The only Acquired Brain Injuries Assessment and Transitional Living Unit in the South East Region is to close and staff have been left without any communication from the HSE, according to South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath.

Sli Eile is the HSE’s Community Assessment and Transitional Living Unit (TLU) for people with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) based in Clonmel. Set up in October 1999, it is the only HSE run rehabilitation service for people with ABI in the south east region. Sli Eile provides short to medium term residential rehab placement’s in the community for 3 people at any one time.

Last Thursday week, Senior Management within the HSE Disability Services visited Sli Eile and announced that the Transitional Living Unit was to be closed as part of the service plan for the South East and Staff are to be redeployed to Damien House. The Staff have had no further communication to date from the HSE with regards to when their positions in Sli Eile will terminate.

“How many more services are being closed without consultation and consideration? This is just another heartless attack on the most needy in our society.” said Deputy McGrath

“The Staff were basically told this service is closing, just move on. What about the service users and where are these services going to be transferred to? The HSE cannot continue with these slash and burn tactics without accountability. They are answerable to no-one and their lack of accountability is getting worse rather than better under this administration.”

“We need answers. The Service Users and Staff need to be treated with respect rather than the utter contempt that they are being treated with.”

Deputy McGrath has said that he will raise this matter with Minister of State Kathleen Lynch .
