Abbey Road Residents Unhappy Over Fires
Residents of Abbey Road in Thurles are calling on Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann to ensure that no further fires occur at the depot on their street. The latest fire occured on Wednesday last, adjacent to Thurles Railway Station, and resulted in four buses being totally destroyed.
Black smoke billowed from the inferno for some time as four units of the fire and emergency personnel gained control and eventually put out the fire. The smoke could be see as far away as Holycross with the breezy conditions carry the toxic smoke huge distances. And, an oil container was only feet away from the blaze which resulted in much concern to locals and the fire and emergency services. Thankfully, the fire did not spread and was confined to the buses, all of which were in used.
A number of residents have contacted The Tipperary Star expressing their concerns about the depot which has been the victim of much vandalism in recent times - a fire took place there only a few monthly previously in which two out-of-service buses were extensively damaged also.
One caller to The Tipperary Star stated that responsibility for the yard must be accepted and said that adequate security must be put in place. The caller also questioned why buses are not locked and said that it is not good enough that “a blind eye” is being turned to the vandalism and a lot of anti-social behaviour is occurring there.
“This place has become a real blackspot for the neighbourhood and with the fires, there is a lot of upset to residents. There hasn’t even been an attempt to apologise to residents for the disruption and I just wonder why the owners don’t contribute to the neighbourhood watch up here,” the caller said.
The fire attracted a lot of attention locally and for the second time in less than six months, Abbey Road was the focus of attention for the fire brigade. The matter was investigated by the Gardai who attended the scene.
