The Ursulines in Thurles currently have three projects running under the Young Social Innovators initiative.
We Cancervive has seen aheightened awareness of breast cancer in the all-girls school with all TY, fifth and sixth years having been shown how to properlyundertake breastchecks- more than 300 were assisted last week in the school.
The Breakfast Club has sought to ensure that a proper healthy breakfast is availed of by every student with breakfasts provided in the canteens for those who cannot get breakfast before leaving for school.
And, Buoys Aloud is a water safety project which heightens awareness of water safety in the community .
The We Cancervive group which comprises: Sarah Louise Costelloe, Kate Tierney, Roisin O’Sullivan, Chloe Barrett, Laura Ryan, Saoirse Harrington, Anne Campion, Laura Ryan (2), Megan Hayes, Rachel Dwan, Sinead Callanan, Ciara McCabe, Anna Slattery Fitzgerald, Ellen Fitzpatrick, Rachel Perdue, Rebecca Tuohy, Shannon Tynan, Emma Ryan and Blaithin Linnane have been extremely active and have driven home the breastcheck message while at the same time helping out Suir Haven in Thurles.
“None of our group had ever heard of Suir Haven until we started this, but now we all know about it, and so does all the school. We visited the centre and are fully aware of the great work they do there,” the students told The Tipperary Star this week when we visited.
The hope is that the breastcheck module may become a permanent fixture in the school so that every student passing through the Ursuline will be evry well versed in breastcheck - what a fabulous legacy that would be for this group of Young Social Innovators.Mol an oige agus tiocfaidh si .
