Independent TD Mattie McGrath has heavily criticised the Minister for Health and the Cabinet for ramming through legislation on Universal Health Insurance despite the unanimous objections of GP’s across the Country.

Deputy McGrath was speaking as his office continues to be inundated with emails and letters from gravely concerned GP’s who foresee massive difficulties in the roll-out of the plan:

“This is perhaps the single greatest threat to the integrity of our health care system since the establishment of the HSE itself.

Doctors have been attempting to express their evidence based fears that if this legislation is brought into effect in the summer it will be catastrophic for the delivery of community based care.

There is no reason for the Government not to listen to these worries bar their single minded determination to exercise a brutal kind of executive Government power that has become so typical of this coalition.

This is not some kind of idle speculation on the part of GP’s; it is a real and substantial threat to the welfare of our citizens because of its capacity to totally destabilise the network of community connections that have the local GP at their heart.

The legislation must not come into effect on the ground. To that end I will be continuing to give every support I can to struggling and already over-burdened GP’s and I would encourage everyone who uses their GP to do the same,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
