Top cyclists back in Nenagh for the Visit Nenagh Classic

Preparations are well underway for this year’s Visit Nenagh.ie Cycle Classic, which will be held on Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13.

This is the third staging of the event that sees some of the country’s top riders race around the streets of Nenagh and along the roads of North Tipperary.

“Once again we are looking forward to having the cream of Irish cycling come to Nenagh,” said Visit Nenagh.ie chair Cllr Virginia O’Dowd. “It is the only race of its kind in Ireland.”

Over 350 competitors have signed up for the race. She encouraged people to come out on to the streets on Sunday to see the riders off and then to take part in the family cycle, which begins at 11am, and will be led off by the Nenagh Ormond Brass Band. The first riders depart from the Abbey Court Hotel at 10.30am, with the main race starting at 11am. Also included in this year’s programme is a dedicated ladies’ race.

“Afterwards, people can linger at the many stalls that are setting up in Nenagh for the occasion. This year, our food and crafts market is being brought on to the footpaths along Pearse Street, allowing people to browse and to soak in the atmosphere of the race as it unfolds,” she said.

Market co-ordinator Marie Nagle of Cinnamon Alley, said while stall spaces are limited, there are some spots still available and anybody interested in taking part should contact her. “I see the event as a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful town by putting us on the map nationally and internationally,” said Marie. “Nenagh has an abundance of young talent and our local traditional musicians, singers and dancers will entertain the crowd. As a business person, I believe the local food producers and crafts people whose stalls will line the main street of Nenagh on the day can only enhance Nenagh’s reputation as a market town.”

TippFM will broadcast live from Pearse Street. Adding to the carnival atmosphere will be the fun park on Banba Square, which will include the JKC Berg Track.
