Tipperary Gardai appeal for witnesses to collision

Gardai in Borrisokane are appealing for any witnesses to a serious accident in which a child and a woman were injured on a side road off the Birr to Portumna road to contact them at Borrisokane Garda station.

The acccident on Tuesday at around 10.30am on the Annagh Cross to Croghan road off the main Portumna to Birr road.

The four-year-old child and the woman in her 30s were initially taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, but the child was later airlifted to Galway University Hospital where her she remains in a serious condition. The woman was due to be released from hospital this Wednesday.

A Garda spokesman said the driver of the truck was from the Birr area while the woman and child were from around Rathcabbin and they would have been familiar with the road.

A crane had to be brought in to remove the truck from the scene and this resulted in the road being closed for a number of hours. Gardai also carried out a technical examination of the scene.

Meanwhile, the man who was killed in a single vehicle crash near Clonmel in the early hours of yesterday morning has been named as Daniel Conroy from Auburn Square in the town.

The 28 year old was a front seat passenger in the car which hit a ditch at Rathronan on the Clonmel to Fethard road shortly after 1 o’clock on Tuesday morning.

Mr Conroy’s remains will be reposing at his home on Thursday with removal at 7.30pm to St Oliver’s Church. Funeral Mass on Friday at 10am followed by cremation in Glasnevin Crematorium, Dublin.
