The Anner Hotel in Thurles has been plucked from receivership by three local businessmen who have pledged to return the iconic landmark to it’s brilliant best and to safeguard the 62 staff members in the process.
The Tipperary Star can confirm that contracts have been signed by Michael, PJ and Seamus Maher, Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles to take ownership of the Anner Hotel in this, it’s Golden Jubilee year. Immediately plans are being put in place for an extensive refurbishment, inside and out, to help expand it’s role as a leading venue and hotel.
The Maher brothers, well known in the local property market, are to be congratulated and wished well with their first move into the hospitality industry. They are determined that once business has been tied up on the deal in April, they will commence the renovation of the 96 bedroom facility, which comes complete with a conference and business element and leisure centre.
Of course the Anner Hotel also has a renowned ballroom and has been a landmark wedding venue for the last five decades with many generations of the families hosting their happy events in the hotel.
The hotel had been placed into receivership last year following a lengthy process - former Manager Mr Frank Mulcahy had owned the hotel for the previous 28 years and contributed handsomely to the social, business and cultural life of the locality by placing the venue at the disposal of many clubs, organisations, companies, business elements, families and individuals. It was also a well known location in terms of the bar trade with an extensive relaxing bar area proving a winner with those frequenting the hotel as well as those availing of the facilities.
It is hoped that the hotel will be formally r elaunched in May 2014 to coincide with the Golden Jubliee and the Maher brothers are determined that it will be restored to it’s former glory in time for the big event.
