Thurles all set to host AIMS youth workshop

The Ursuline Boarding School in Thurles is this week gearing up to welcome almost fifty musical theatre teenage enthusiasts for the annual Association of Irish Musical Societies Summer Workshop .

Almost two decades after the workshop was established to promote excellence and impart stagecraft on the younger generations, it is still going strong and continues to have a major influence on the many who have participated through the years.

The workshop will see the participants arrive in Thurles on Sunday next and they will then work with renowned Director/Choreographer Peter Kennedy for the week alongside Musical Director, Mary Rose McNally.

They will be coached on all aspects of musical theatre and AIMS has always stressed that the workshop is not necessarily for the elite performer. However, one common thread throughout the years has been the tremendous progress made by participants and the huge sense of self confidence gained by working with the best and mixing in such an influential atmosphere.

Of course it is not all hard work - the participants and facilitators thoroughly enjoy the experience and lifelong friendships have been formed arising out of the week in Thurles.

The workshop is generally regaded as one of AIMS finest projects and there will be many members of the National Council present in Thurles throughout the week to keep an eye on proceedings and see how the work is progressing.

AIMS National Secretary Mary Butler, of Thurles Musical Society fame told The Tipperary Star this week that the workshop is eagerly awaited by all and is a hectic, but very benefitial week.

“Anyone who has been involved in the week will tell you that it is very benefitial and AIMS is delighted that it is going so well, after almost twenty years. We are celebrating 50 years in existence next year and there are many plans in train for that, so it will be an exciting year. And, we are thrilled that the youth summer workshop continues to be as popular as ever and the numbers have remained steady all the time,” she said.

The group will finish off their week with a concert on Friday evening before departing for home afterwards.
