Sports star awards

R.C.T.L.C. has announced its 16th Sports Stars Award recipients for 2013 - headed by Hall of Fame recipient Tadhg O’Connor from Roscrea.

Everyone in Roscrea over the age of 50 remembers with pride Tadhg O’Connor as Captain of the Tipperary Senior Hurling Team bringing the Liam McCarthy Cup to Roscrea on that fateful Monday night following Tipperary’s All Ireland victory the day before on the Sunday of September 1971.

Tadgh was accompanied by his teammate Francis Loughnane, who has already entered the Hall of Fame, when both men were greeted as heroes as they were hailed by well wishers through the streets of the town. Tadhg and the other recipients will be presented with their award at the 16th Presentation Dinner to be held in Racket Hall Hotel on Friday, February 28th next year. Rosderra Meats are sponsors of the Awards, which would not be possible without them.The other recipients in the announced 2013 R.C.T.L.C. Roscrea Regional Sports Star Awards are: Athletics: Templemore Athletic Club – Relay Team, Camogie: Niamh Dollard, Golf – Susanne Corcoran, Gaelic Football: Colin O’Riordan from Templemore, Ladies Gaelic Football: Mairead Daly, Hurling: Matthew Whelan from Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton, Pitch & Putt: Rivedale Ladies All Ireland Team Champions, Rugby – Alison Miller from Nenagh, Youth Award – Dwayne Palmer from Camross, The Special Recognition Award goes to Pat Naughton from Nenagh. Club of the Year goes to Loughmore/Castleiney.

This year’s Contribution to Sports is being awarded to Ken Henderson, who was a stalwart of Roscrea Rugby Club, training many young players who were to go on to bring great honour to themselves and their club.
