“We are just astounded at the support we have received from the community and the goodwill towards our school event.”

The words of Scoil Ailbhe, CBS Primary School Principal, Miriam Butler on Friday evening last, accurately reflected the huge turnout and level of support for the second annual Fun Run and Walk.

They came from all over to be part of the event and there was a fabulous atmosphere before, during and after the event with the school hall packed to capacity with pupils, parents, past-pupils, friends, staff members and people who had no links whatsoever with Scoil Ailbhe.

They all enjoyed superb hospitality and welcome refreshments after the exertions of the 5km route which brought many on roads they had never travelled before.

The fundraising committee had everything planned down to a tee - nothing was left to chance - and the staff members, parents and members of the Board of Management who formed the committee did a great job. They gave of their time, energy and expertise to turn what could have been a nice event into a spectacular one. Take a bow one and all.

Of course support for the school extended far beyond those who actually walked or ran. There were many sponsors, local shops and businesses who came on board as well as members of Thurles Crokes who were so helpful with the running of the event, and Thurles Order of Malta who were present, as always, just in case. Where would local groups be without their support for every facet of the community.

Spiderman was a big hit with the kids and while his supernatural powers did not see him over the winning line ahead of Liam Shanahan, he certainly created aa stir. Carmel Fitzgibbon was first lady home, while Zoe Fitzgibbon was first girl home and Adam Daly, first boy.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening with a super buzz - looking forward to next year already.
