The 27th Annual Roscrea People of the Year Awards for 2013 will be held in the Abbey Hall on Tuesday Jan. 14th. The awards have been organised since 1987 by Roscrea People. As usual admission will be by voluntary donations with all proceeds going to Roscrea People book projects at St Cronan’s Centre Grange and its other houses in Birr, Nenagh and Thurles. The evening will commence with a short concert by Junior Comhaltas Ros Cré, followed by an illustrated presentation on Roscrea’s past and presented by the editor, George Cunningham. Castle Street will be the main historical feature during the talk. First class audio and visual aids will be generously supplied by Ger O’Meara to allow for a fully professional presentation. The main formalities of the evening commence with the annual presentation of book collections to Tipperary Public Libraries, St Cronan’s Centre and this year’s school recipient Leabharlann Mhic Ghabhann at Lismackin NS. Of great significance will be the fact that this year the 50,000th book will be presented - a total of 50,000 books will have been presented since 1987 to various schools and institutions, locally, regionally and nationally. This formal presentation will be of the eight volume superb facsimile edition of the Trees of GB and Ireland by Elwes and Henry. This is a magnificent set of volumes first published in 1907 and published in a limited edition in 2013 to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Irish Foresters.

It also helps to mark the Roscrea Tidy Towns Tree Award in the National Tidy Towns competition in 2013. The formal awards and citations to the people of the Year will then be presented. The evening will close with a light supper catered for by Mulrooney Gala Catering. As with other years, a free booklet will be available highlighting the bios of the Award winners. Bernies SuperValu are the main sponsors with Roscrea Credit Union main associate sponsors. Other associate sponsors are Frank Murray Construction, Rocktop Asset Management, Roscrea Heritage Society, Walsh printers, and Redmonds Photograpers. The Gala evening is a significant social occasion. Why not attend and say well done to these outstanding Roscrea citizens and institutions?
