Also in photo are L/R: Michael Costigan, Mary Madden, Michael Sheedy. Bourney/Bournea Reaching Out recently hosted a lecture by Professor William J.Smyth, a native of the parish, on “The Great Irish Famine in Bourney and District”, at Lismackin Hall on May 13 at 8pm.

There was a raffle on the night for three books by local authors: The Atlas of the Great Irish Famine which Professor Smyth co authored; Farewell to the Thatch and the Whitewash, by Jim Kennedy, and From Roscrea to New Guinea, by Liam Doran.

Meanwhile, George Cunningham’s new book, The Round Tower At Roscrea & its Environs formally launched at Racket Hall this year by Dom Richard Purcell, is now available for purchase. The 296 page quarto size book has over 370 illustrations, mostly in colour.
