Labour’s Cllr Virginia O’Dowd has called on North Tipperary County Council and the National Roads Authority to erect proper signage on the M7 for Newport and the Clare Glens.
“There is no indication at the Birdhill exit from the M7 that you can access Newport from that junction. There is also no signage for the town until you get to the junction with Coopers Pub in Birdhill,” she said.
The local election candidate, who has made her request to the council in a motion before the next council meeting, said: “Newport is the gateway to the Clare Glens, one of the most scenic spots in this area, and to the Slieve Felim mountains.”
Cllr O’Dowd pointed out that North Tipperary County Council had recently signed the contract with Nordon Landscapes Ltd for enhancement work on the Clare Glens, but said: “Without proper signage Newport and the Clare Glens will not be able to fulfill their full tourist potential. They will remain hidden gems.”
