‘Nuns on the Run’ for Musical Society

Thurles Musical Society is extending an open invitation to everyone to join them on a ‘Nuns on the Run’ Fun Walk and Run in Thurles on Sunday February 23rd.

The fun run and walk will coincide with the staging of Sister Act the Musical - a Republic of Ireland premiere -and we have it on good authority that there will be a number of ‘athletes’ running in costume on the day. With the New Year resolutions probably all forgotten at this stage, this could be your chance to get back into the excerise ‘habit’ - anyone who runs in a habit will receive a reduced entry fee for the event.

The walk and run will kick off from the Anner Hotel - the main sponsor of the show - and will take in Dublin Road, Cathedral Street, Liberty Square, Slievenamon Road and back up to the Anner again for the finish. The entry fee for the event which kicks off at 12:30pm is 10 Euro, or free upon production of a sponsorship card which are available from the organising committee members.

This is a really novel event - a new departure for the Musical Society - and it is sure to put the fun back into ‘fundraiser’. Musicals are becoming more and more expensive to stage , but thanks to the tremendous support received from the business community and the general public in the greater Thurles area, it has been possible to survive for well over sisty years.

Rehearsals are continuing for the show which takes place in the Premier Hall from Tuesday March 25-29th and which will feature more than sixty people on stage. Director Tony Finnegan - a renowned figure in musical theatre circles - in Thurles this week setting scene and getting through a huge amount of work, while Choreographer Debbie Kiernan is also plotting her sequences to bring life to the musical number. Musical Director Mary Rose McNally already has the chorus in fine voice with rehearslas having begun in early January.

The photo shows Maria McElgunn - a well known and accomplished performer with TMS and also Thurles Drama Group. Maria plays the part of the Mother Superior is Sister Act and brings a huge range of experience to the role. She has come full circle ,complete with veil, having played the novice Maria in the Sound of Music back in 1991 and now the Mother Superior.
