Cllr John “Rocky” McGrath has appealed to the Minister for Transport for additional funds to tackle roads that he described as being in an “appalling condition” in the Newport area.

The Lowry Team councillor stated that a number of important roads in his area had been “devastated” and were in a near impassable condition at present.

Cllr McGrath said that North Tipperary County Council was not adequately resourced to tackle the resurfacing works needed and called on the Government for further funding.

“There are a number of roads in the Newport area that are in a very poor condition at present and are simply destroyed with potholes. The condition of these roads is causing huge inconvenience to residents, not to mention causing damage to vehicles and being hazardous. The roads of Lacka in Killoscully, Ballymackeogh in Toor, and Ballycahane in Ballinahinch are particularly badly affected,” said Cllr McGrath.

“People are paying increased charges and have a reasonable expectation that they will see the benefit of these charges in their local community. Unfortunately, this is not the case and we as a council are finding ourselves having to try and do more with fewer resources. Despite all representations, the council simply does not have the funds to carry out these works. On this basis, I am urging the Minister to release emergency funding for these works. In the meantime, I will continue to work with the Council and will be trying to get repairs carried out on these roads as soon as possible,” he said.
