Dromakeenan, celebrated the opening of the Fallon Library on Thursday, which is situated in the foyer of the school.

Pupils and staff were joined by members of the Fallon family, George Cunningham, INTO President Mr Sean McMahon, Fr Tom Corbett and parents and friends.

Principal Brendan Hanamy welcomed everyone to school and in particular Billy Fallon’s widow Helen, son Liam and daughter Claire, and members of the extended Fallon family.

He added that in naming the new school library it was a fitting tribute to two former Principals Ms Kathleen Fallon and her nephew Billy.

George Cunningham of Roscrea People Publications spoke of his delight to be involved in his fifth library project, the preceeding ones being in Sacred Heart, Scoil Eoin, Pat Carroll Library in Coolderry Central School, and Lismackin NS.

He said it was a particular pleasure to honour two great Roscrea People from different eras who between them gave over 50 years as Principal in Scoil Chrónáin Naofa.

George spoke of Miss Kathleen Fallon, or Rita as she was affectionately known, who was a lady well before her time.

“She gave her whole life to education, and actively encouraged all the Fallon family members to go as far as possible with their education,” said Mr Cunningham.

“She was Gaelgoir, a strict but fair disciplinarian, and was very involved in church activities.

She was Principal from the late 1920’s until her sudden death in 1962.

Her nephew Billy took over as Principal at this time.

Billy, also a Gaelgoir came to Scoil Chrónáin Naofa from Ballaghmore, having previously been in Ballymahon.

He was very much a community activist being involved in church, many aspects of the community and his beloved golf club.

He remained as Principal until his untimely death in 1979.”

George then presented books associated with the Fallon family to Liam Fallon and to the school which included samples of original printing from 1480, 1514 and 1625.

Principal Brendan Hanamy thanked all those who had contributed to the library.
