Gerry McInerney: local election candidate

Independent local election candidate Gerry McInerney is the first casualty of this month’s elections, withdrawing his name from the ballot paper.

Mr McInerney cited the difficulty on new people getting elected to the enlarged council as the reason for his withdrawal. He has instead thrown his weight behind Cllr John Carroll, Fianna Fail.

“The formation of the new Tipperary County Council made it impossible for a new candidate to secure enough votes to get elected in the Nenagh-Newport electoral area,” he said.

Mr McInerney, who ran a shop in Pearse Street, said he was delighted with the support he received on the doorsteps and streets from young and old in the past three months.

“However, one must be realistic and honest with themselves,” he said, and having discussed his options with close friends, he decided that this time he was “out of the race”.

A native of Borrisoleigh, Mr McInerney was a member of Fianna Fail from 1980 until 2007 when he quit the party after he became disillusioned with its leadership.

Despite pulling out of the election, he said he was determined to continue to work with organisations in the Nenagh area and be an active member of the local community.

While wishing the remaining 22 candidates the “best of luck”, Mr McInerney said he will be strongly supporting Fianna Fail’s Cllr Carroll, who he described as “hard worker, totally dedicated to helping people and a county councillor who gives his full working career as a member of the county council”.

Mr McInerney further stated that he believed Cllr Carroll had a bright political future in the horizon and the people of Nenagh and North Tipperary needed a candidate who will represent them with “honesty, integrity and work hard” at local and national level.

Fianna Fail has no town candidate as such in the election with Cllr Tom Mulqueen having missed out at the selection convention. Cllr Carroll, who lives in Kilcoleman, about 5km from the town, will be joined on the ticket by Cllr Mattie Ryan “Coole”, Eamonn Spillane, Ardcroney, and Martin Kennedy, Newport.
