Thurles had the pleasure of having its first male national boxing champion for nearly 40 years when twelve year old Michael Doyle confirmed his place as number one in Ireland recently,
Michael who boxes out of Thurles Boxing Club, had to go to battle with the best boxers in the country, winning the County Championships/Munster Championships in style, and booking his ticket into the National Championships in Dublin.
The draw was made and Michael had a semi final with Dylan Devine from Raphoe Boxing Club Donegal with the Thurles man winning all three rounds.
Straight into the finals then where Brian Mangan from the famous Drimnagh Boxing Club Dublin was waiting. Michael boxed extremely well taking all three rounds and being crowned number one in Ireland. A letter was given to Michael saying he has been invited to train with the elite boxing squad in Dublin mixing with the cream of boxers. .Michael will box again in the Juinor cadets in three weeks time.if Michael does well in the cadets he has a chance to go to the European Schoolboys Championships in Hungary this year.
Michael has worked very hard to get where his is now and will train harder again for the cadets. He is a pupil at Coloiste Phobal Secondary School ,Roscrea and his success is due to the hard work and dedication of his coaches and his parents.
