Metering of water begins in North Tipp

Irish Water have announced details of its domestic water metering roll-out in North Tipperary which results in the first meter installations in North Tipperary this week.

Water meters are currently being installed in Kildare, Kerry, Meath, Wexford , Limerick, Mayo, Dublin City and Fingal.

Irish Water’s metering programme will result in the creation of 1,600 jobs as part of the nationwide installation programme which will see more than one million meters installed throughout Ireland over the next three years. The jobs will be available across the country and recruitment is underway.

Advance notification of at least 14 days will be issued to each householder before meters are installed with information packs outlining the details of the installation process. There are no upfront costs for meters and water charges are due to be introduced in Q4 2014 with the first bills issuing in January 2015.

Commenting on the start of the Irish Water metering in North Tipperary, Irish Water, managing director, John Tierney said: “We have been working closely with North Tipperary County Council for a number of months to ensure that plans are in place for the efficient and managed rollout of our water metering programme”.

“I would like to compliment the County Manager Joe MacGrath and his staff for the highly professional manner in which they have helped us prepare for this programme. We are committed to installing water meters with minimum inconvenience to householders and communities.”

Meters will be installed outside domestic residences on the public water mains in the hours between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday. Each meter installation will take from 15 minutes to two hours, depending on the work to be carried out. Meters will be placed in a meter box, fitted underground in the public footpath outside the homeowner’s property. Installers will have official Irish Water identification, wear branded uniforms and will never ask to enter people’s homes.
