A meeting is to take place today (Friday) of Fianna Fail’s members of Tipperary County Council to consider removing the whip from poll topper Councillor Michael Smith, The Tipperary Star can reveal.
Cllr Smith is facing this very serious situation having voted on three occasions against party wishes at the first meeting of the Thurles Municipal District meeting. He was elected Chairman of the District having voted against party colleague Cllr Jackie Cahill, to claim the chair himself.
We understand that Cllr Smith had been summoned to a meeting earlier in the week, but sent a message stating that he would not be attending. However, he was, later in the week, sent a letter by the party requiring him to attend this mornings meeting which has just one item on the agenda.
The Tipperary Star understands that it is almost inevitable that Cllr Smith will lose the party whip at this meeting, whether or not, he decides to attend.
