Dorothy Bradish, who marks 24 years as a volunteer with the North Tipperary Hospice Movement (NTHM) this year, was recently named as a

Hospice Sunflower Hero.

Dorothy was honoured at the event in Dublin to mark the launch of National Sunflower Days in June.

The award was presented to Dorothy and another 17 Hospice volunteers nationwide. In place for five years, the Hospice Sunflower Heroes initiative honours the work of volunteers throughout the country, who work tirelessly on behalf of their local hospice service.

Dorothy, who volunteers with the Templemore branch, was nominated for the award because she continues to work tirelessly and selflessly to provide an excellent service to cancer patients in the North Tipperary area.

She became involved with the NTHM following the death of her father-in-law when she recognised the lack of support and services available. She feels that prior to 1990 and the establishment of the NTHM, there was no support for patients or their families on the cancer journey. But since then, she has worked tirelessly for the patients and families who are receiving the best care and support from the NTHM.

Hailed as a “one of the most hardworking volunteers in Tipperary”, her nomination stated: “Dorothy is most deserving of being called a hospice hero. She is an example to all volunteers and never speaks ill of anyone.”

The Hospice Sunflower Heroes were announced at the launch of the 2014 Sunflower Days campaign which took place in different locations around North Tipperary, from the 5th - 7th of June.

The Templemore, Thurles Nenagh, Roscrea and Borrisokane branches all took to the streets for this year’s Sunflower Days, and the annual event was supported throughout the county. The North Tipperary Hospice Movement would like to thank all the supporters and volunteers who helped make this year’s Sunflower Days a huge success. More information at www.sunflowerdays.ie.
