Sympathy: We were saddened to hear of the death of Mr. Walter Nolan, Garnavilla on Wednesday, January 9th. Well known to us here in Ardfinnan, a gentleman, liked and respected by all who knew him. After waking at home, removal was to St. Paul’s Church, Cahir for Burial Service on Friday then to Cork Crematorium. May he rest in peace.
Post Office closed: The closure of five rural Post Offices in the West of Ireland last week should be a reminder that no rural Post Office is safe. We must ensure that our Post Office in our very much expanded Village remains with us. We should frequently remind our T.D.’s and County Councillors about this matter.
Bad Weather: Ardfinnan has got its share of the storms and heavy rain that has been hitting us since the last of the long dry spell at the end of November. While the heavy rain must be a welcome boost to our water supply source on the Knockmealdowns, from which there is an ever increasing demand as more and more housing developments are occupied. There is also the downside, the River Suir rose rapidly during last week the Green was flooded on Thursday and on Friday. Our Main Street was deeply flooded over most of its length. Traffic was just able to get through by driving slowly, at the Church side of the street. The actions of one or two tractor drivers and one delivery lorry driver left a lot to be desired by driving fast through the flood creating high waves hitting other vehicles, pedestrians and off the doorways of residents of the upper part of the street trying to keep water out of their homes. Perhaps those who say Ardfinnan should be closed off during flooding and detour through Cahir are correct. Luckily, flooding receded on Saturday. Locals and fishermen say they never saw our weir so dry in November and say it is a pity the opportunity was not availed to clean it and repair the damage done during cleaning, last year. Some of us were like the shipwrecked mariner on Friday, water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink, supply was off in the St. Finnan’s/Gortnalour area for a time, a burst pipe we were told. Our compliments to our County Council workers who despite all the flooding got water supply restored again after a short time.
