A GREAT grandmother who has raised a family of seven, is aiming to cross the finishing line on her 18th marathon this year, and all for a good cause. Maureen Armstrong is a mother to seven - Marion, Martina, Dennis, John, Seamus, Michael, and PJ - granny to 21, and great-grandmother to three.

Maureen’s life is an example to be followed. Walking around the family farm in Upperchurch every morning, the 87-year-old is an active Church-goer, and fundraises regularly for a whole host of charities, including the Irish Cancer Society.

Proud son PJ says the secret to Maureen’s longevity and good health is an active lifestyle, a positive outlook on life, and a strong faith. “She’s worked hard all her life, raising seven of us. She loves going to Mass. Very caring in general, about neighbours, friends and family. She doesn’t drink or smoke, never did. And she still has her Pioneer Pin.”
