Having carried out a quick spot check of the Main streets in town at midday on Sunday last, the most noticeable improvement with regard to cigarette butts along the footpaths was outside Brendan Dwan’s premises in Castle Street where there wasn’t a cigarette butt in sight.
Signage at the Roundabouts and junctions around the town is not in the interest of a tidy town, and will undo the hard work being done by so many volunteer. Events from as far away as Thurles and Cloghan, is advertised on large boards and wheels, and planted on our approach roads and within the town. This is just not acceptable to Tidy Towns volunteers who spend all year working in the interest of the town, and two months preparing an application to enter the competition, and then see this proliferation of signage all over the place.
Trees and Flowers
During the past week, the newly planted trees have been struggling for the want of water, and much time and money has gone into planting them, so if you live near any that you notice wilting would you please give them a large container of water nightly to keep them alive until the rain returns. Likewise with regard to new floral containers, window boxes and baskets, please keep them watered nightly, and feed them once a week to get the best results.
Thanks to Miriam and Monica who brought their staff out to help with planting the two roundabouts at their entrances during the intense heat on Friday last, and while it was probably their first lesson in flower planting, we now leave the work of watering, feeding and weeding to them for the Summer months.
The fourth Oscar goes to Mary and her planting team for the organisation, preparation and planting of all the flowers in containers, and beds, over the past few weeks, the Tidy Towns Committee and Community say a BIG THANK YOU.
