The final of the Heineken Thurles Inter-Pubs Pool Tournament is down for decision this weekend with Kennedy’s Tower Lounge taking on Denis Corbett’s in what is expected to be a real cracking contest.
An awful lot of pool has been played in the run-up to this final and the last two standing have certainly worked hard to ensure that they are in a position to win the competition outright.
The competition has really captured the imagination in The Cathedral Town and with the charity element involved, there will be benefit for some worthwhile causes in the community. In fact, both of the teams in the final have nominated the Sean Doran Fund as their chosen charity , so this charity will be a winner no matter what the result in Hickey’s on Friday evening next - first break at 9:00pm.
Last weekends semi-finals saw Kennedy’s Tower Lounge come through by the skin of their teeth when they defeated Bannons of Two-Mile-Borris in a real nailbiter. With the scores at 5/4 the match was decided on the black ball - it could not have gone more to the wire and provided great excitement for all in attendance as well as some nervous moments for those on the table.
The second semi-final saw Denis Corbett’s defeat Larry Fogarty’s by 5/2 to set up a granstand finale this coming weekend with Kennedy’s Tower Lounge.
Such has been the success of this inaugural event in Thurles that there are plans in train to continue it year after year. There is a real appetite for pool in the area and when players are doing their best for charitable organisations and hoping to direct some funds in their direction, the intensity really cranks up.
There has been some great pool played over the last few months and there is sure to be more of the same in the final on Friday evening in Hickey’s.
So, if you would like tocheck out what’s going on, why not get along to Hickey’s and see the cream of Thurles in action.
You’ll be very welcome.
