Members of Thurles Musical Society were feted and celebrated at Aras an Uachtarain this week by President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina.
The glittering reception was held to celebrate and mark the Golden Jubilee of the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) to which Thurles Musicla Society is affiliated and has very strong representation.
AIMS is the parent group for societies all over the island of Ireland and is responsible for the selecting and hosting of the annual ‘academy awards’ of the musical theatre scene, the AIMS Awards, which have been held in Killarney for more than a decade now.
Thurles is no stranger to AIMS Awards with many individual and collective awards coming the way of the Society down through the years, the pinnacle of which was the winning of the Best Overall Show for The Hot Mikado back in 2000.
At present, the AIMS National Sectreary is Thurles lady Mary Butler, while one of the awards co-ordinators is TMS Secretary Laura Ryan, who was joined at the recpetion in the Aras by TMS Chairman Jack Gleeson and committee member Gary Dempsey.
“It was a lovely day and Thurles Musical Society was delighted and thrilled to have been apart of it. President Higgins was very welcoming and it was fitting that AIMS should be congratulated on reaching such a milestone by our President ,” Jack Gleeson told The Tipperary Star this week.
