Over 30 national and international teams have already confirmed their participation in this year’s Ring of Lough Derg BBQ Competition, with more anticipated.

The event, run in conjunction with the Irish BBQ Association, will take place in Flanagan’s on the Lake in Ballina on Saturday, August 29.

The Battle of the Grill is expected to be sizzling as the winners of the An Fulacht Fia Cup will represent Ireland in next year’s European Championships.

Each team will be given a grill, the meats and utensils to cook up a storm and they can choose to rub, marinate or mop their entry and season it with whatever herbs and spices inspire them. Judges will be looking out for and scoring the teams’ dishes based on appearance, taste and texture / tenderness, with taste carrying the most marks. Cash prizes amount to a total of €1,100 with €500 going to the champions. There will be a first, second and third prize in each of the three categories, along with novelty awards for Best Dressed Stand, Squeaky Clean Hygiene and Happiest Home. The BBQ sauce category, a stand alone novelty category, will be judged on its own merits, the only rule is it must taste good and be whiskey inspired.

“I am delighted to see so many teams interested in this year’s event. It proves that the Ring of Lough Derg BBQ Festival is firmly on the Irish culinary map for both chefs and patrons alike,” said Cathal Quinn of Flanagan’s.

The day promises not only to be a culinary experience, but also fun for all the family with local food producers showcasing their products and lots of family fun with live entertainment.

The closing date for entries is August 21. Send entries to IrishBBQassociation@gmail.com or call Deborah on 087-9078793.
