The Sacred Heart Primary School attracted attention this week both nationally and from outer space.

The school website, www.sacredheartroscrea.com was launched last Wednesday by Kristin Hadfield. Kristin is studying for a PhD in Trinity College Dublin.

A Canadian, Kristin is daughter of Commander Chris Hadfield who is currently aboard the International Space Station. Having accepted an invitation to launch the website from Mrs Heenan, a teacher at the school, Kristin honoured the school community by giving them a presentation about her Dad and his life. In anticipation of her visit children at the school had engaged in extensive study about the planets and space. They learned all about Commander Hadfield and what it is like to live in space. Kristin told the school of how the Commander dreamt of being an astronaut even when Canada had no space program of its own. His career path from fighter pilot to test pilot was good training for life in outer space.

The children gave Kristin a great display of their knowledge. When asked why astronauts have red, puffy heads when they are in space Eoin Guerin from first class gave an insightful response about the effects of gravity on the human body. A round of applause for Eoin’s knowledge had just finished when Kristin’s phone rang.
