THE government of the People’s Republic of China kidnapped the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists - the Dalai Lama - and continues to teach Chinese children that the hula hoop and the computer were invented in the Middle Kingdom, and not in the West, according to a South Tipperary County Councillor.
Cllr Bobby Fitzgerald made stinging remarks about the conduct of the Chinese government at this month’s meeting of South Tipperary County Council, following a discussion about what to do with the vacated Army Barracks located in the centre of town. Much discussion has taken place about what to do with the historic Army buildings site.
Cllr Joe Brennan (FG) suggested using the space as a Chinese Interpretive Centre, showcasing Clonmel in the South East. Cllr Fitzgerald (Lab) said he “nearly had a heart attack” when he heard Cllr Brennan’s suggestion.
“The Chinese government has replaced the Tibetan minority, and kidnapped the Dalai Lama. They claim they invented the hula hoop and the computer and the car.” Cllr Fitzgerald said he would find it “very offensive” that the Army Barracks be used to faciliate “the people who have no regard for human rights.”
