A call by Cllr Virginia O’Dowd to ask Justice Minister Alan Shatter to roll out the Restorative Justice scheme nationally was supported by county councillors at their March meeting.
Cllr O’Dowd, who is secretary of Nenagh Reparation, said that the scheme was running in Nenagh and Tallaght, but had great potential to be made available nationally. Under restorative justice, first time offenders are given a chance to address the issue that caused them to commit an offence and to do some work in the community. If you are accepted on to the programme, you do not receive a criminal record.
The call backed was by the council, with Cllr Jim Casey complimenting Cllr O’Dowd for putting down the motion.
