District Court Services operating in Cashel for many decades are under threat according to Councillor Tom Wood.
Cllr Wood says he has heard that that despite a denial from the Court Services that a proposal exists to close Cashels Courthouse he has been reliably informed that the issue is firmly on their agenda.
Councillor Wood believes that the aim of the indepth review is to discontinue services in towns like Cashel and centralise them in larger centres and cities. In a submission in defence of retaining the Court Services in Cashel he says, “while centralisation is all the rage little thought is given to those using or working in the services. Cashel is a busy court servicing an extensive catchment area stretching from Araglen in the most southerly part of the county through to Cahir and Killenaule and its closure would have far reaching negative consequences. Cashel’s central location and a good roads network is beneficial to all concerned while those dependent on public transport could face serious difficulty getting to and from another location.”
