Small and independent retailers in the centre of Roscrea are being squeezed by the recession, with the closure this week of yet more businesses.
Xtravision announced recently that their Roscrea branch would be the only Tipperary store to close, with the loss of about four jobs.
Four or five more units now lie empty in the heart of the town, with rumours that another well-known premises on the Main Street may close in the near future. It all adds up to a grim picture for Roscrea, which has already seen the closure of the centuries-old Courthouse, and last year, the Permanent TSB bank branch.
Newly installed Chamber of Commerce President Seamus Browne said the closure of even a small number of stores in the Main Street can give the impression of a “standstill.”
