South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath has once again called on the Government to legislate the scrap metal and cash for gold industries.
He made the calls after the English House of Commons passed a Scrap Metal Dealers Bill last week, similar to the Bill that he introduced to Dáil Éireann last November.
Deputy McGrath has criticised Minister Shatter and the Government for their complete lack of action over the last 12 months, despite the fact that many of their backbenchers supported the need for legislation.
Deputy McGrath claimed that the Governments inaction is giving criminals a free reign to bring hardship on families, businesses and communities throughout the Country.
“We continue to have houses being broken into every day of the week with Gold Jewellery being the main target, we have farms and businesses being robbed of metals and we have precious statues and artefacts being robbed from heritage sites across the Country” claimed Deputy McGrath
“I have repeatedly called on Minister Shatter to move on this matter and 12 months later we are still waiting for action, while many other jurisdictions are moving to deal with this matter. All we have had from this Government is a report telling us that the Joint Oireachtas Committee should examine the matter. We need report after report before we move to do anything and in the meantime the citizens of the Country suffer” concluded McGrath
