Noel Coonan TD has welcomed the news that the HSE West has advertised for a senior dietician post in Limerick Regional Hospital which will make possible the roll out of insulin pump therapy to children with diabetes in North Tipperary.
“I have been in touch with Diabetes Action and the HSE’s Regional Director of Operations since early this year enquiring about funding set aside for nursing and dietetic posts at Limerick Regional Hospital. I also enquired about progress with the HSE National Clinical Programme on Diabetes. This has been an ongoing issue for me and I have been liaising with many Tipperary families who were concerned about the need for improved paediatric diabetes services,” said the local Fine Gael TD.
“Diabetes Action contacted me last week saying this support for paediatric diabetes services in Limerick will ensure a more balanced development of these services across Ireland, augment a speciality in Limerick Regional Hospital and enhance quality of life for Tipperary families of children with diabetes.
“I strongly agree with Diabetes Action when they say this development will bring lifelong health benefits and independence to dozens, but eventually hundreds, of children and young adults with diabetes in the Mid West. This will end exhausting and costly trips to hospitals in Dublin for Tipperary families and is a very welcome development,” continued Deputy Coonan.
“I am more than happy that my representations have contributed towards the advertisement of the post which will come as a relief to many Tipperary families. I have contacted many families who are very grateful that insulin pump therapy will be made available,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
