Huge Show to Premiere for Thurles Society
The big news this week is that we have chosen our show for 2013 and Titanic is set to sail and perish in the murky waters of the Premier Hall from March 19th-23rd. This is a massive show with loads of parts for male and female leads and it will certainly challenge our company. There will be huge technicial challenge also and there is a real determination on the part of the Society to meet the challenges head on and to make Titanic a very memorable show.
Of course the show should resonate with Thurles audiences since a native of the area, Mr Denis Corcoran, died on board the ill-fated liner having set sail from Southampton in April 1912. Originaly from Killahara, Denis was a fire man on the Titanic but was not lucky enough to have been one of the 868 to survive. His relatives are still living locally and have done much to ensure that Denis’ memory lives on despite the passing of time.
So, 101 years after Titanic sank to the bottom of the ocean just off Newfoundland, the musical will come to The Premier Hall, and what a beautiful show it is. With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone the show opened on Broadway in 1997. It won five Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical.
Rehearals for the show will begin in January with Peter Kennedy on board as Director/Choreographer and Mary Rose McNally as Musical Director.
We are looking forward to staging a two night concert in the Anner Hotel on Friday and Saturday night November 16/17th. This will be along the same lines as our concert in May and we are hoping that our members will make themselves available to perform in advance of the challenge of Titanic, which will be quite costly to stage. The first rehearsal for these concerts will be on October 18th with other dates to be advised thereafter.
We will hold a table quiz in Skehan’s Bar on Friday November 30th with tables of four costing 20 Euro, or 5 Euro per participant. This promises to be a very entertaining evening and we are looking forward to seeing all our members on the night.
Our Annual General Meeting will take place in Hayes Hotel on Thursday, September 20th at 8:30pm. This is the opportunity for members to have a say in the running of our Society and we encourage as many as possible to attend. Any Notices of Motion must be with Secretary Laura Ryan four days prior to the AGM in order to be debated on the night. So come along and get involved in the discussions.
Stage to Page Leader Funding
We wish to inform our members and all who purchased a copy of Page to Stage, A History of Thurles Musical Society, that North Tipperary Leader Partnership has withdrawn support for the publication, having originally sanctioned E5,359 ( 75% of printing cost).
This, a problem not of our making, is very regrettable and has resulted in our executive and committee members being very disappointed with how we have been treated. Thurles Musical Society has been, and will continue to, promote musical theatre and a love of the stage in The Cathedral Town for over six decades. This achievement is beautifully and accurately recorded in our history book of which we are very proud.
However, we felt compelled to inform the public of the withdrawl of support, since we had originally lauded North Tipperary Leader Partnership for their sanctioning of our application. Page 335 of Stage to Page, A History of Thurles Musical Society can now be ignored, if not torn out altogether.
