Noel Coonan TD has asked the Environment Minister to make funding available for people who may not be able to afford improvement works to their septic tanks. The local Fine Gael TD was speaking at this week’s Parliamentary Party meeting where he pressed Minister Phil Hogan on the issue.

“Septic tank owners across Tipperary can now avail of the low registration fee of just €5 and I would kindly urge them to do so. However, once the registration process is complete and inspections begin to take place, it may appear that many people will not have the money to pay for the necessary improvements works,” said Deputy Coonan.

“I raised this important issue with the Minister and suggested he make funding available in these hard times when people cannot get credit from banks or credit unions. I put the onus on him to make funding available whether it be through a local authority fund, banks or credit unions.

“The Minister said that he cannot make a decision until he knows the extent of the septic tank problem nationwide and what the average cost will be for the householder. I will continue to press the Minister on this subject,” continued Deputy Coonan.
