Renowned scholar, historian, educationalist, writer, community activist and visionary, Mr. George Cunningham, is to review this year’s 34th successive Roscrea St Patrick’s Day Parade, which takes place on St Patrick’s Day itself at 3 p.m.

The Community Development Council’s (RCDC) organising committee are honoured to have “George” review this year’s parade. George Cunningham, the founding editor of “Roscrea People” has become synonymous with “Roscrea Heritage”, having spearheaded the numerous developments in that regard over the past four decades and which has given Roscrea the priceless restored heritage treasures which it has today.

Mr. Cunningham initiated the “Roscrea Conference” 25 years ago. This ‘Conference’ which is historical and archaeological in nature takes place twice a year in the spring and autumn in Mount St. Joseph’s and this Spring the 50th ‘Conference’ takes place. George also served on the governing authority of the University of Limerick for a period of 17 years. During this period, the Glucksman Library was opened at the University and the enormous part which George Cunningham played in the development of that project ensures that his name will always be associated with it.

The Roscrea Parade, taking place on Saturday March 17th, again starts from the ‘Old Dublin Road’, where floats are asked to assemble at 2.30pm with the parade commencing at 3p.m. Prior to the Parade there will be a pre-parade reception in Damer Court Hotel for guests and which will include the blessing of the shamrock.

While the organising committee will gratefully accept any donations, entry to the parade is free of charge. As the parade is very much a community parade, community organisations and groups as well as business and individuals are urged to make an extra special effort this year and take part in the parade.

For all information for entries etc the parade secretary Marie Tooher may be contacted at the Community Office Abbey Hall ‘phone no. 050523183. The organising committee for this year’s parade under the auspices of RCDC are Chairman Liam Shanahan, Vice-Chairman Arther Crowford, Secretary Marie Tooher, Treasurer Steve Crofton, P.R.O. John Lupton and committee members Sean Delaney, Brendan Keeshan, Mary Heffernan and Spruce Lynch. Novelty entries of any kind from groups or individuals would be most welcome. The annual collection for the parade takes place on Sat/Sun February 25th/26th before all masses in Roscrea and Camblin. As bands are now extremely costly, the ongoing generosity of the community is very much appreciated.
