AT last week’s meeting of Nenagh Town Council Mayor Virginia O’Dowd revealed that North Tipperary Hospice had requested permission to use the council’s ballot boxes for the charity’s Christmas collection.

Mayor O’Dowd explained that North Tipperary Hospice intended to erect a “giant Christmas tree” in front of the Court House. North Tipperary Hospice then intend to sell three hundred sponsored lights to members of the public. The Mayor has appealed to the people of Nenagh to support this venture during the festive season.

Mayor O’Dowd also announced at last week’s meeting of Nenagh Town Council that the Chamber of Commerce, in an innovative departure, was encouraging schoolchildren to participate in an attempt to break a world record and gain the town an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

The Chamber of Commerce hopes to attract over 1,000 children to dress as elves on December 18 next. Mayor O’Dowd appealed to the schools, parents and community to support the project.

“A huge effort should be made to make this event a success,” Virginia O’Dowd said.
