North Tipperary local authorities have been urged to engage more with the public under submissions made to it by the citizens’ forum group, North Tipperary Claiming Our Future.
The group held a Citizens’ Forum in Nenagh Arts centre last May and has submitted the recommendations from that meeting to councillors.
One of the recommendations is that a a recognised group / citizens’ forum under the Local Government Act 2001 be established which would exchange views and make proposals on the work of local government.
The forum also recommended that a participatory budgeting forum be set up to give citizens a direct influence on budgeting decisions made, while creating more awareness of the work of the council.
It is submission to the council the group says that people feel disconnected from democracy, and the general perception is that deep change is needed.
