Jim Kennedy's Pub, Parnell Street, Thurles, will be the place to go to on Saturday 5th February 2011 for what will be a fantastic nights entertainment in aid of a very worthwhile cause which is to send Thurles man Liam Cooke to Lourdes.
In 2007, Liam had the world at his feet. He had been accepted into a highly prestigious Craft Council of Ireland Jewellery Skills course which only accepts twelve people every two years on to the course. He really was living his dream as he loved making jewellery from a young age and he was the father a beautiful child with another on the way. However his life completely changed in a matter of days.
Liam was involved in a minor car accident. His injury from the accident did not appear to be immediately serious and after being examined he was told that he was fine, that it was just a "bump on the head" and he could go home. However Liam started to get headaches and the following Monday sought a second opinion from a different doctor along with an A&E department examination where he was again told that he was fine. The following Saturday his family knew that something was not right with him and after a mental ability test where questions such as what day and date is it, who was president, etc. were asked of Liam, he failed every question asked of him and he thought that it was actually 1996. The next day, Sunday, the hospital performed a CAT scan on Liam and they discovered that he had two massive brain haemorrhages on the right side of his brain. He was taken immediately to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and had an operation at midnight. Two days after the operation Liam had a stroke which was discovered to be as a result of the massive operation. The stroke left him paralysed on the left side of his body and partially blind.
Full story in this week's Tipperary Star. However, Liam has set himself a far greater goal and that is to visit Lourdes. He has a great belief that such a trip would help towards his recovery. His strength in the belief of his recovery and return to his old life is unwavering which is a testament to the kind of man he was before his accident and it is that strength that has encouraged his friends to organise a fundraising event in order to secure the cost of sending Liam to Lourdes.
The fundraising event has been organised for Saturday 5th February 2011 in Jim Kennedy's of Parnell Street, Thurles and it is hoped that Liam will be able to attend. Two bands will play on the night, established local band, Jester and the country's most in demand cover band, Blue Moose.
