The first Roscrea People of the Year Awards were held in January 1988, sponsored by the Pathe Hotel.

They were presented by guest artist the late Nigel Williams and Guest of Honour Bishop Harty, now also sadly deceased. The award winners that night were as follows: Gay Treacy for providing multi-channel TV to the area, Danny Moloney and the Workforce of Roscrea Meats, John Carroll (RIP) and Roscrea Credit Union celebrating 21 years, Link with Fr Tom Hogan and Eileen Shanahan of Roscrea Youth Club, Frank O’Meara and Roscrea Tidy Towns. That night computing equipment was donated to St Cronan’s and the organiser George Cunningham commenced the Heritage Collection at Roscrea/ Tipperary Public Libraries.

Both these institutions have continued to receive donations each year. The George Cunningham Heritage Collection at the Public Library, after 28 annual donations now numbers over 4,000 volumes. Shortly afterwards the annual schools’ presentation was initiated. To date over 50,000 books have been donated.

On this Thursday, January 15th, at Racket Hall, Roscrea People continues this proud tradition of honouring those who went that extra mile for their community in 2014. Please support this significant social event in the annual life of Roscrea. The 28th Awards’ evening is sponsored by Bernie’s SuperValu with associate sponsorship from Roscrea Heritage Society, Rocktop Asset Management Ltd and Roscrea Credit Union.
