A Rockwell College Transition Year student was among the top prize winners at the National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) Press Pass writing and photography awards held at the National Convention Centre in Dublin on Thursday last.
Mark Bergin (16) finished second in the Sports writing category for his article entitled ‘The €6 Million Filly’ which is based on the sale of Makin’s Irish Oak’s winner at Goff’s Bloodstock sales in Kildare last November. While he has a keen interest in horses Mark made the particular trip that day to Goff’s to what he described as “one of the most significant events in Bloodstock”. He later decided to enter the competition for the NNI after been encouraged by Transition Year Co-ordinator Mr Patrick Egan and English teacher Ms Wini Ryan. Education Minister Ruairí Quinn said: “We need people like you who want to report on the world. Don’t take our democracy for granted.”
