Tipperary bridge can be ‘shook with your hand’

A bridge outside Nenagh is so bad, you can shake it with your hand, Newport area councillors were told. Cllr John Carroll said the bridge at Shallee was near a group of houses and that young people used it as a meeting point.

A bridge outside Nenagh is so bad, you can shake it with your hand, Newport area councillors were told. Cllr John Carroll said the bridge at Shallee was near a group of houses and that young people used it as a meeting point.

“It is in a bad state and I am concerned something might happen. You can shake it with your hand,” he warned.

Senior engineer Michael F Hayes said that the council will examine it.

The engineer revealed that E9,000 was spent last year surveying bridges and that it showed that no bridges in North Tipperary were in the worst Category 5 list. However, there were “one or two” in the Category 4 list.

Area manager Marcus O’Connor told the councillors they will have the ratings list for Newport area bridges at their next meeting.

Meanwhile, the council was asked to look at removing the bend at Castletown bridge by Cllr Jonathan Meaney.

Cllr Phyll Bugler was told there was no funding for bridges where there had been accidents as that involved realignment.
