Tipperary TD Noel Coonan has welcomed the appointment of Joe McGrath as new Manager for North and South Tipperary County Councils when they merge next year into one unified Tipperary County Council. Deputy Coonan said this merger has been in the pipeline for years and widely advertised and Mr.McGrath, who is currently Manager of North Tipperary County Council, is “more than well qualified and equipped for the role.”

“My colleague and Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan announced the merger two years ago in July 2011. The two Councils and Department officials have been focusing their efforts and consulting for a long while to ensure an efficient merger.

Deputy Coonan continued: “As a TD for Tipperary, I have communicated regularly with Mr McGrath. He is undoubtedly a competent and experienced official. I have confidence in his new role and look forward to our continued co-operation,” said Deputy Coonan.

“This development should not come as a surprise because we knew well in advance that one Manager would be appointed. It is important we now move forward with the Implementation Plan. Some opposition Politicians are saying Minister Hogan is driving the merger but in fact there is cooperation across the board between Department and Council officials. To say otherwise is scare mongering and making a political football of this very important issue,” concluded Deputy Noel Coonan.
