Tipperary County Council will continue to pursue the owners of the disused Shannon Vermicomposting site at Rathcabbin outside Borrisokane, local councillor Michael O’Meara has been told.

Director of services for the environment Matt Shortt told Cllr O’Meara a lot of work had been done at the site over the past six months and a report was sent to the Department of the Environment.

He pointed out it was a private site and the council had also contacted the EPA and said that body will look at how to address the problem. The council also has a High Court order against the site owner, who lives abroad.

Shannon Vermiculture was set up as an organic waste disposal facility but fell foul of locals and regulations. It closed in 2005, when it was estimated that it could take E2m to remediate the site.

“It is not hugely contaminated but it has to be disposed of and landfill is the only option,” said Mr Shortt. He said that people had been “very patient” with the issue, but the council had to explore every avenue.
