On Saturday the 4 th of October 2014 history was again made in St Mary’s International Garden of Remembrance.

Councillor David Doran Chairman of the Durlas Eile Eliogarty Memorial Committee and Mr John Wort President .and P.R.O. welcomed Mr .Park Sungchoon Minister of Patriots and Veterans Republic of Korea. His Excellency Ambassador Hay-Yun Park Republic of Korea to Ireland for a memorial ceremony for the 109 men and one woman who died in the Korean war 1950 \1953 serving with the Royal Ulster Rifles. the American and the Australian Army, The Columban Fathers and Sister Mary Clare Community of St Peter Anglican Church .It was the first time in our Irish History that the Minister for Patriots and Veterans Affairs from the Government of the Republic of Korea visited the Republic of Ireland. A great honour for the memorial committee and the town of Thurles and for all the people involved on the day north south east and west. Councillor Jim Ryan public relations officer for the committee welcomed all present and introduce the first speaker Councillor Michael Fitzgerald on Cathaoirleach of Co Tipperary .Councillor Fitzgerald said it was a very proud day for him to be here for the first time in St Mary’s International Garden of Remembrance to remember all Irish who died in the Korean war . On Behalf of all the people of Co Tipperary Councillor Fitzgerald thanked Minister Park and Ambassador Park ,Councillor Fitzgerald thanked the Memorial committee for all the work that was carried out over the years in St Mary’s Garden of Remembrance putting Thurles and Tipperary on the global map.Next speaker Mr Park Sungchoon ,Minister for Patriots and veterans Affairs.The Minister talked about the war in his country at the time Korea was one of the poorest countrys in the world at that time , its very survival was in doubt .The rise of Korea of today is indeed amazing .That underlies the significance we attach to documenting the Korean war and acknowledging the sacrifices made by so many Irish men and women bringing our country to where it is to day .The Minister went on to Thank Mr John Wort President of the Committee for all the work carried out by him and the Staff of the Embassy in the planning of todays ceremony.The minister said it was a great honour for him to be here in Thurles to day to lay a wreath at the Irish Memorial on behalf of the people his country and to meet with some of the veterans of the Korean war.Minister Park paid tribute to the memorial committee for the outstanding work that has taken place here in St Mary’s . Minister of State Mr.Tom Hayes T.D for the department of Agriculture ,Food and Marine was representing the Irish Government. Minister Hayes welcomed Minister Park and Ambassador Park to St Mary’s ,Thurles ,Co Tipperary he said he hoped it would be the beginning of many more visits to by him to our country and to Co Tipperary .Hi Grace Dr. Dermot Clifford Archbishop of Cashel an Emly then addressed the visiting V.I.P.’S and the many people who came from far and wide . His Grace Talked about war and the conflict of war in the world today .He thanked the veterans who were present because of the sacrifice they had made in bringing peace to parts of the world so that we would have a better world and a good place to bring up our children.Hi Grace went on also to thank the memorial committee and all the people present .Our last speaker was Mr Guy Jones President of the Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation and over seas spokes person for the Durlas Eile Eliogarty Memorial Committee..Mr Jones talked about peace in the world the people who fought and died for peace so that we and our children could live our lives in peace with their family’s . Minister Park then presented Peace Medal and Certificates to the veterans and family members of the Korean War, It is a great honour and pleasure to express the everlasting gratitude of the Republic of Korea and our people for the service you and your countrymen have performed in restoring and preserving our freedom and democracy. We cherish in our hearts the memory of your boundless sacrifices in helping us reestablish our free nation. In Grateful recognition of your dedicated contribution .it is our privilege to proclaim you an Ambassador For Peace with every good wish of the people of the Republic of Korea .Let each of us reaffirm our mutual l respect and friendship that they endure for generation to come.
