Shoppers in Cashel are to get an early Christmas present from the local council, with half-day free parking in the town on Saturdays in November.

The town council already offers half-day free Saturday parking each December to help boost traders in the run-up to Christmas.

The decision was announced by Cashel town manager, Sean Keating, at this month’s meeting in response to a motion from Cllr Martin Browne, SF, calling for free Saturday parking all-year round to try and encourage more people into the town.

“The way things are going we are going to need to start enticing people in. I know we’ll lose, but we are taking enough knocks. Businesses are struggling. We are not going to have ratepayers if shops keep closing,” he said.

The town manager said that while he appreciated the sentiment of Cllr Browne’s motion, the council already had a budget for 2014 that included certain assumptions about expenditure and income.

“We are holding to that just about. If we were to remove part of the income it would have knock-on effect on services,” he warned.

He suggested extending the half-day free parking in December into Novemnber, and was supported by the town clerk, Mary McGivern, who pointed out that the town still retained its 20-minute free parking arrangement every day.
