Roscrea gears up for St. Patrick’s Day

RCDC’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee, chaired by Mr Steve Crofton, is finalising plans for the town’s 36th St Patrick’s Day Parade.

RCDC’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee, chaired by Mr Steve Crofton, is finalising plans for the town’s 36th St Patrick’s Day Parade.

The Parade starts from the old Dublin Road Roscrea next Monday at 3pm. This year’s parade will be reviewed by Guest of Honour Liam Doran. A native of Roscrea, Liam has contributed greatly to the social and cultural life of the town and district for the past 45 years. He was a journalist with the Nenagh Guardian newspaper for many years before taking early retirement in 2006. Liam has edited a number of publications including the Nenagh Guardian’s 150th Anniversary supplement in 1988, Roscrea’s RFC’s 50th Booklet in 1999, Roscrea CBS’s “Lest We Forget” book, and Ballaghmore’s Church Bi-Centenary Booklet in 2012. Last year Liam was author of “From Roscrea to New Guinea: John Letsome Moten and Murray Moten DSO CBE”. This was praised in the Australian Senate in December and is included in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra collection. Liam has contributed to many publications, including John Phelan’s “In the Shadow of the Goalpost – Borris-in-Ossory, Kilcotton, Kyle G.A.A. story (2004); “Cead Bhliain Faoí Ráth:- Cistercian College, 1905-2005 edited by Conor Brady and the late Liam S. Maher; “Borris-in-Ossory Parish: History, People and Places” by John Phelan (2008); along with articles on Minor and Vocational Schools Hurling, and contributions down the years to Roscrea People. The Parade Committee is seeking business and community floats, walking parties etc. Information on the parade is at the Abbey Hall Office from Marie Tooher, Tel 0505-23185. Prior to the parade on the day there will be a pre-parade reception for guests and ecumenical blessing of Shamrock. Roscrea Ceoltas will entertain people in the vicinity of the Review Stand from 2pm.
