A group of five students from the Ursuline Secondary School are hitting the heights with their Budget Busters company which features a phone app designed to bring all the best offers from supermarkets onto one site.
Hazel Houben (Holycross), Orlaith Clancy (Thurles), Katie Cahill (Thurles), Chriss Ryan (Templederry) and Lorna Ryan (Borrisoleigh) are the brains behind the app which features Dunnes Stores, Centra, Tesco, Lidl ,Aldi and McKevitt’s Costcutters. Most of these supermarkets have their own special offers and apps, but the Ursulines have brought them all together into one app where prices and offers can be compared.
And, the awards have flowed for the Budget Busters. The Mini Company Student Enterprise Awards saw them claim a Special Merit as they advanced to the regional finals. And, in the Get Up and Go regional finals held in Galway recently they qualified for the nationals again and won three awards in the process - two gold and one silver.
The app is available to download on Google Play Site and the girls are working on devising an Apple platform also. The technical work was undertaken by students in NUI Maynooth after the app was designed by the girls themselves.
At present the app is free to download but there may be a charge at a later stage.
The project is being overseen by teacher Anne Marie Burke and has been sponsored by Ely’s Centra, Stakelums Office Supplies and McKevitt’s Costcutters.

Congratulations to the girls. We wish them well.
