The electoral areas for the new Tipperary County Council that will replace the current two councils in the north and south of the county as well as the town councils were revealed last week by Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan. The new council comes into place after the 2014 local elections.

Under the plan, Nenagh, Thurles, Clonmel, Tipperary Town, Templemore, Cashel and Carrick-on-Suir will lose their town council status, with the merged north and south local authority having its numbers reduced from 48 to 40.

Nenagh and Newport electoral areas will be merged, while Templemore and Thurles will be joined to include Roscrea as well as Glenkeen from the Newport area. The proposed Templemore-Thurles local electoral area will include the electoral divisions of Clogher, Gaile, Buolick, Fennor and Kilcooly from the current South Tipperary County Council administrative area.

The proposed seven-member local electoral area of Cashel-Tipperary would include the two current town councils that give the new local electoral area its name.
